Bleeding hearts form compact clumps from which sprays of much-divided, fernlike leaves issue in spring. Closely following the foliage and continuing into the summer months are slender stems of vivid deep rose, nodding, heart shaped blossoms. Flowers have a spicy scent. 'Bacchanal' is a probable hybrid, though at times it is classified as Dicentra formosa, a western U.S. species.
