Evergreen to deciduous rhizomatous perennials grown for dramatic foliage, flowers, and form. They have really been rediscovered as part of the new appreciation of foliage as a primary design element. Most do best in full to part sun, and in my experience they sulk if they don't get direct sun during cool springs. Dramatic as specimen container plants, especially against a wall. They are tough and will survive on little watering when established but for superior leaf quality, vigor, and bloom irrigate deeply and regularly. USDA zone 7/Sunset zones.
