Pandemic or not… it’s spring… that magical time of year when all the plants want to grow, grow, grow. And since many of our customers are #shelteringathome during a time when obtaining groceries can be challenging, there’s been a huge resurgence in vegetable gardens. We are already sold out of potatoes, which is a first for us. The slogan “Victory Garden 2.0” is being bandied about. Wherever this impulse to grow our own food is coming from… it is helpful to stay busy and active during worrisome times. And with the kidlings out of school, it’s a great time to get them involved as well.

Our main certified-organic herb & veggie supplier, Sweetwater Nursery in Sebastopol, has suspended deliveries for the time being. We completely support their decision, wish them well, and hope they are able to resume normal operations at some point. Life is just so much better with Sweetwater in it and we are feeling their absence.

Two of our other growers have been supplying us with summer veggie starts. Kudos to them for stepping up! At first, tomatoes and peppers were in short supply and we were limiting the number of plants per customer, but this week supply is better and we may lift the limit. Every day we reassess… and adapt. We are also working toward getting veggie starts into our new web store! Because of the way small plants like that are barcoded, it isn’t currently possible to add individual varieties. For that reason, herb and veggie starts are being sold mostly in person and over the phone. We’ll let folks know if that changes.

There’s a lot you can plant from seed right now, and seeds have been flying out the door. There’s even still a couple weeks left for planting tomatoes indoors and peppers and eggplant outdoors from seed! Not to mention, you can plant all kinds of easy-from-seed veggies like beans, corn and squash! What are you waiting for?!
