Veggies & Herbs!
Winter is bringing plenty of rain to Sacramento gardens, so it’s bound to be a lush and colorful Spring! Gentle temperatures and plenty of sunshine makes it an ideal time to plant. One of the most frequent questions is “When will you have tomato plants?” Most likely we’ll bring some in toward the end of March. Early birds like to get tomatoes in the ground in March, though waiting until April is just fine. If you do buy your tomato plants in March, keep them indoors in a warm sunny location (i.e. greenhouse or sunny windowsill) until you are ready to plant outside. If you want to plant them in the ground in March, use plant insulators to create a mini greenhouse environment for your heat-loving tomatoes.
Color!
We’ll also make the gradual transition to warm-season annuals like zinnias and marigolds. You can still plant cool-season plants like pansies, and combining cool-season color with warm-season color expands your plant palette. When the cool-season annuals start to fizzle as summer heat takes over, the warm-season plants will be coming into their full glory.
Just this week we brought in our first Million Bells (Calibrachoa) of the season. By the end of the month, the nursery will be bursting with color!
Spring-planted bulbs are on the way too.
New!
We are always on the lookout for new and unusual plants. Check out this Chinese Pink Celery from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds! We have it on our Baker Creek seed rack right now.
That’s just a tiny taste of what you’ll see at the nursery in March. Every week brings new orders, and it’s a constantly shifting menu of what’s available to us… that we make available to you!
