July is all about harvesting, mulching, watering, feeding, weeding and pest control.
Harvesting
If you planted early enough, you are harvesting regularly from the garden! Yay, you! Harvest early in the morning… share those zucchinis… and look for fun recipes to make! We love checking @urbanfarmstead for “Simple Recipes” in his Instagram Stories.
Mulching
If you haven’t already, now is a great time to put down a 2″-4″ layer of mulch. Stock varies weekly, and supply is a bit variable right now due to COVID-19, but right now we have plenty of Micro Bark. http://www.plantfoundry.com/store/
Watering
Hoses are one of those things that often bring grief to a gardener’s life. They kink… they get stiff… they can leach toxic chemicals… they can be ugly… and they can be heavy. That’s why we sought out a maker of non-toxic hoses that are a joy to use. Water Right garden hoses, coil hoses and soaker hoses come in gorgeous colors like Olive and Eggplant… are drinking-water safe… lightweight and pliable, and they don’t permanently kink! Good hoses cost a little bit more, but they’re worth it. Available in our web store and at the nursery!
Feeding
During hot weather, you want to be careful not to burn plants with overly-strong fertilizers. That’s another reason to go organic. Organic fertilizers feed more gently, in a way that improves your soil health over time. If plants are looking a little lackluster or yellowed, it may be time for a feeding.
Weeding
Continue hand pulling weeds, and consider weed barriers and mulch to help keep weeds at bay. We carry synthetic and biodegradable barriers, and bark mulch.
Pest Control
Watch for mosquitos, caterpillars, slugs and snails, ants, and more. We carry organic solutions for all your pest problems.
