We’ve had an early start to Spring. Our growers are responding accordingly by offering long lists of beautiful plant material, much of it in bud and bloom. Spring is considered by many to be the ideal time to plant nearly everything. The soil tends to be very workable and temperatures are optimum for plant growth. It’s a great time to plant fruit trees, including citrus, and color, color, and more color in the form of annuals, perennials, shrubs, vines and trees.
Do you need basic landscape plants such as foundation shrubs for softening the foundation area of your house? It’s prime time for planting those too.
It’s still too soon to plant tomatoes, peppers and eggplant outdoors unprotected, but you can start seeds indoors, and continue nurturing seedlings in cold frames, greenhouses, under grow lights, or even on sunny windowsills. When soil temperature reaches a steady 60 degrees, it’s safe to plant warm-season veggies in the ground. In the meantime, see our planting list for cool-season veggies you can plant outside now!
Raised beds tend to warm up sooner, so pop a soil thermometer in there if you’re wondering about soil temperatures in different parts of your yard. No thermometer? Then plant when you can comfortably sit on the ground without freezing your butt off.
