The ideal window for Fall planting is closing, so if you haven’t already planted, the time is now. Here’s what you can plant–

Cool-Season Annuals

Get instant Fall color from annuals (and tender perennials we treat as annuals) like pansies, alyssum, ornamental kale, Iceland poppy, primroses and snapdragons. Add longer-lasting perennial sources of Fall color by planting sasanqua Camellia, Chrysanthemum, Cyclamen, Dianthus, Echinacea, Gaillardia, Salvia, Japanese anemone, etc.

Cool-Season Vegetables & Herbs

Look for cool-season edibles like lettuce, mustard, kale, cilantro, parsley, and “year-round” herbs like rosemary, thyme, oregano, etc. Visit us soon while we still have plenty of veggies and herbs!

Bulbs

Last chance to plant tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, Ixia and more outdoors. Bulbs like paperwhites, hyacinth and amaryllis can be forced into bloom indoors during November and December.

Wildflower seeds

From California poppies to wildflower mixes, it’s the perfect time to broadcast wildflower seeds in sunny areas needing beautification. Look for our Scatter Cans from Renee’s Seeds, along with various packets from Renee’s, Botanical Interests and Baker Creek Seeds.

California Native Plants

Fall is the ideal time to plant natives. Roots will nestle in over the fall and winter and the plants will be ready to put on new growth come spring.

Landscape Plants

If you’re looking for flowering shrubs, think about adding sasanqua camellias. Coppery-colored ‘Yuletide’ is a popular favorite this time of year. It’s also a great time to plant most landscape shrubs, trees, vines and perennials. You can plant nearly everything now, but be careful when planting cold-sensitive plants like citrus, succulents and tropical plants. Any frost-tender plants should be covered with frost cloth before frosts or freezes occur.

Flowering Sweet Peas

Fall is the ideal time to plant flowering sweet peas in Sacramento. Planting now gives them a chance to sprout and seedlings to develop, and they’ll be ready to grow and bloom at the ideal time in spring, while temps are still mild like they like it!

Cover Crops

It’s a great time to plant some “green manure” cover crops like clover, fava beans, vetch, and peas in beds where you aren’t growing a winter crop. Cover cropping is a great way to add nitrogen and organic matter to garden beds, and their presence will also improve soil tilth and water penetration. And if you want a cover crop that you can also eat, go with fava beans or peas!
